Our History

In 2005, Columbus couple Jenni and David Belford were moved to build a permanent, year-round camp for children with serious illnesses. They coined our name from the book The Big Red Barn, in which a “golden flying horse” weathervane sits atop a barn on a farm where kids and animals play freely.

Our Legacy

Flying Horse Farms opened its gates to campers in 2010 and was the first camp in the Midwest to become a member of the SeriousFun Children’s Network. Founded in 1988 by actor, philanthropist, and Ohio native, Paul Newman, the Network is a community of independently managed and financed camps and programs creating opportunities for children with serious illnesses and their families. The Network has evolved from one camp in Connecticut to a growing global community touching the lives of 600,000 children and families from 50 countries, across five continents.

Every child’s safety is our top priority.

In addition to a lake, a pool, and a big red barn, our camp features a state-of-the-art medical facility and 24-7 on-site care from our full-time medical team.

We start by making sure kids are medically, physically, and emotionally safe at camp, so they can focus on fun. We understand that children with serious illnesses have special needs from diets to devices. Addressing those needs comes before anything else.

We also make sure they’re mentally and emotionally safe because that’s what builds confidence. Kids at Flying Horse Farms get the opportunity to freely explore interests and passions in a way they’ve never experienced, and get psychosocial, trauma informed support from on-site child life specialists.
