Seasonal Staff Opportunities

Village Leaders oversee 2-3 cabins each session to provide supervision, support and guidance to campers and cabin counselors. They ensure supervision ratios are maintained, manage schedules, lead activity area transitions and help to resolve conflict between children and adults. This role specifically focuses on Mental Health and Ranger programming.

Team Overview

The Program Team brings the camp experience to life by creating programs, building community, and ensuring the safety and well-being of all camp participants. The team creates accessible and developmentally-appropriate programs and recruits, processes, and supports a large team of volunteers and seasonal staff. In adherence with laws and camp governing bodies; they develop, plan, and implement camp emergency procedures and policies.

Responsibilities

  • Attend Seasonal Staff Training (May 29 - June 5)
  • Attend High Risk Certification & Leadership Training (May 20-23)
  • Oversee the village operations of 2-3 cabins, each housing up to 10 campers
  • Attend daily morning medical meetings (as needed) and coordinate with cabin staff on camper care needs
  • Observe camper behavior and assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and provide suitable behavior support techniques
  • Collaborate with psychosocial and cabin staff to address camper behavior concerns
  • Support, lead, and evaluate cabin staff and volunteers
  • Collaborate with Staff Leader to plan and implement staff appreciation initiatives and events
  • Coordinate break schedules for seasonal staff and volunteers
  • Assist with the facilitation of Ranger programming
  • Maintain open communication with the Psychosocial Team during Mental Health
  • programming to ensure camper safety
  • Fill role(s) on the emergency staffing table as needed

Required Skills, Qualifications & Experience

  • Ability to move across camp grounds and between buildings and activity areas multiple times each day

  • Experience working with adolescents with a mental health diagnosis
  • Ability to live on site

Preferred Skills, Qualifications & Experience

  • Valid First Aid and CPR Certification (strongly recommended)
  • At least 1 season of summer residential camp experience
  • Peer leadership experience

Cabin Counselors are responsible for the supervision of 8-10 campers between the ages of 8- 15 years old alongside volunteers. They keep a close eye on medical and psychosocial indicators, provide personal care assistance when required and hold knowledge of various allergies and dietary restrictions for the campers in their direct care. Cabin Counselors provide supervision, support and ensure campers have a blast!

The Entertainment Specialist will assist in the delivery of full group program entertainment and theme development. This may include emceeing full group programs, leading songs and dances, and coordinating mealtime team leaders. This team will also assist in supporting daily camp logistics including the delivery of full group programs.

The Ropes Specialist will create age-appropriate, adaptive programming for high and low ropes for campers aged 10-17 years old. They are responsible for adhering to policies and procedures at all times while creating a vibrant atmosphere conducive to creating transformation and fun.

  • Ensure that all equipment and supplies are safely stored, inspected, and maintained
  • Collaborate with the Adventure Team Lead and Program Coordinator in the preparation, purchase order, and record-keeping of inventory of supplies in assigned areas
  • Submit weekly high and low ropes plans to supervisor
  • Support, lead, and evaluate ropes volunteers
  • Assist the Cabin Life team with maintaining appropriate supervision of campers, including providing overnight coverage in cabins as needed

Required Skills, Qualifications & Experience

The Outdoor Adventure Specialist is responsible for creating safe, age-appropriate, adaptive programming that is focused on outdoor education for campers aged 8-17 years old. This staff member will create dynamic and detailed lesson plans and will be responsible for supervising volunteers each session. They will also lead the adventure-based Outpost evening program for teens.

  • Support, lead, and evaluate outdoor adventure volunteers
  • Submit weekly outdoor adventure plans to supervisor
  • Assist the Cabin Life team with maintaining appropriate supervision of campers, including providing overnight coverage in cabins as needed

  • Experience with fundamentals of outdoor education (i.e. ecological, zoological, and biological concepts)
  • Experience leading backpacking, canoeing, and/or outpost camping trips (preferred)
  • Background in sustainability or environmental education (preferred)

The Aquatics Specialist is responsible for all aspects of pool and/or waterfront programming including boating and fishing. This includes planning, preparation, and risk management. They will create safe, age-appropriate, adaptive programming for campers aged 8-17 years old. This staff member will oversee and support hourly lifeguards with the completion of daily tasks.

  • Oversee the management of all aquatics areas in absence of Aquatics Manager (boating, fishing, swimming)
  • In conjunction with the Aquatics Manager, coordinate lifeguard schedule to ensure aquatics and waterfront programs meet minimum staffing requirements
  • Implement educational-driven programming for aquatics and waterfront programs and other program areas as needed
  • Submit weekly swim and waterfront plans to supervisor
  • Assist in the modification and adaptation of all aquatics activities due to inclement weather, medical needs, psychosocial needs, or other variables
  • Ensure preparation of daily open/close checklists, inventory of supplies, accident/incident reports, and hourly lifeguard timesheets
  • Oversee and perform daily pool cleaning, record chemical levels
  • Participate in and oversee weekly lifeguard skill checks and in-service trainings as directed by the Aquatics Manager
  • Assist the Cabin Life team with maintaining appropriate supervision of campers, including providing overnight coverage in cabins as needed

Required Skills, Qualifications & Experience

  • Ability to move across camp grounds and between buildings and activity areas multiple times each day
  • Ability to perform job functions outside during summer months (humidity, heat, rain)
  • Valid Level 1 Canoe Instructor certification through the American Canoe Association (or attend on site training May 20-23)
  • Hold or obtain valid Lifeguard & CPR for Professional Rescuer Certifications (Waterfront Instructor certification preferred) or attend training on site May 20-23
  • Ability to implement a multi-faceted program for campers aged 8-15 years with varying physical and developmental abilities
  • Strong understanding of waterfront risk management and emergency planning while keeping safety first in all situations
  • Ability to manage a detailed schedule for a large team
  • Ability to live on site

Preferred Skills, Qualifications & Experience

  • Minimum of 1 year of previous experience in aquatics
  • Experience as a lifeguard or prior lifeguard certification preferred

The Woodshop Specialist is responsible for implementing high risk, age-appropriate, adaptive programming for campers aged 8-17 years old. They are responsible for adhering to policies and procedures at all times while creating an engaging atmosphere that is conducive to fostering transformation and fun.

The Psychosocial Team Member will provide ongoing mental and behavioral health care and support to all campers while they are attending residential camp at Flying Horse Farms.

Team Overview

The Psychosocial Team works to ensure that all campers thrive in a physically and mentally safe environment by delivering quality psychosocial support and care. The Psychosocial Team works in tandem with the medical team to create a space for campers to heal, grow, and thrive. The Psychosocial Team consists of a team of social workers and child life specialist.

Responsibilities

  • Attend Seasonal Staff Training (May 29 - June 5)
  • Observe and evaluate campers, alongside the Psychosocial team, medical team, and cabin staff
  • Support cabin staff with campers' psychosocial wellbeing
  • Document and maintain psychosocial progress notes
  • Provide behavioral and emotional support and supervision directly to campers
  • Oversee camper behavior and assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and provide suitable behavior support
  • Other duties as assigned by the Psychosocial Full-Time Team
  • Fill role on the emergency staffing table as needed
  • Attend daily psychosocial and medical meetings

  • Within one year of obtaining Bachelor's Degree with focus on Child Life, Social Work, or similar focus
  • Experience working with children (children ages 8-15 years old preferred)
  • Valid Driver's License

The Seasonal Nurse will assist in facilitating medically-sound and safe camping experiences for children living with serious and chronic illness. The nurse will provide clinical nursing care to campers, volunteers, and staff while at camp.

Team Overview

The Medical Team ensures our campers, volunteers, and staff thrive in a physically and emotionally safe environment by delivering quality medical care and psychosocial support. This team caters to the specific diagnoses we serve by welcoming talented volunteer doctors, nurses, and specialists to support our campers each session. In adherence with laws and camp governing bodies; they develop, plan, and implement emergency medical procedures and policies.

Responsibilities

  • Attend Seasonal Staff Training (May 28 - June 5). Assignment dates are May 28-August 11 (shortened contract ending on July 25th may be available)
  • Provide direct medical care for campers, volunteers and staff in collaboration with camp physicians
  • Manage medical care details of assigned camper group each session - this includes pre-camp preparation, arrival day check-in/departure day check-out with camper families, daily med distribution, overnight on-call duties, and cabin nursing care
  • Preparation, adminstration, and documentation of medication distribution in accordance with physician orders
  • Act as a preceptor for rotating nursing students
  • Lead weekly medical orientation for volunteers
  • Manage administrative duties pre/post camp related to WellNest inventory and charts
  • Fill role on the emergency staffing table as needed

Required Skills, Qualifications & Experience

  • Willingness to communicate and coordinate with all members of the camp team to provide a safe (physical and psychological) environment for campers
  • Understand pediatric clinical care and be able to act as a medical resource for full time, seasonal and volunteer staff
  • Understand the importance of professionalism and confidentiality in all communication and adhere to all policies
  • Ability to provide empathetic and caring communication to campers and families
  • Ability to live on site (housing provided)
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs.

Preferred Skills, Qualifications & Experience

  • Valid BLS for the healthcare professional certification (PALS and ACLS preferred)
  • Registered Nurse License, valid in the state of Ohio
  • Experience with gtube care, infusions, and port/broviac care preferred
  • Experience in clinical pedatric or medical camp preferred
  • Valid Driver's License
